2010: Passover

What
if the traditional site of Mt Sinai was not in fact the
one referred to in the Bible? Modern scholars differ
as to the exact geographical position of Mount Sinai, and
the same has long been true of scholars of Judaism. The
location intended would obviously have been known at some
point, and the Elijah narrative appears to suggest that
when it was written, the location of Horeb was still known
with some certainty, as Elijah is described as travelling
to Horeb on one occasion, but there are no later biblical
references to it that suggest the location remained known;
Josephus only specifies that it was within Arabia Petraea
(a Roman Province encompassing modern Jordan, southern modern
Syria, the Sinai Peninsula and northwestern Saudi Arabia
with its capital in Petra), and the Pauline Epistles are
even more vague, specifying only that it was in Arabia,
which covers most of the south-western Middle east.
Join us to see this account of two modern-day explorers
attempt to solve the mystery of Mt Sinai's biblical location.
Whether you agree with their findings or not, its an interesting
and entertaining story.

April
2010: Heritage: Civilization and the Jews: The Search
for Deliverance

We
continue our journey through the history of the Jews in
March. We pick up the thread of Jewish history as
the intellectual awakening of the Renaissance began to alter
the attitudes and habits of all people. Scholars such
as Copernicus, Tycho Brahe, Johanes Kepler and Galileo began
to examine the world around them with new eyes.
Abba
Eban takes viewers through the narrow alleys of the Venetian
ghetto life. Jewish composers, artists and poets achieved
fame that transcended the ghetto walls. Spanish and
Portugese Jews who had escaped the persecution of the Spanish
Inquisition, flocked to Amsterdam, known as the "New
Jerusalem" where refugees from religious intolerance
were welcomed.
